Mosfellsbær entertains many visitors each year, especially to view the Álafoss Wool Factory Outlet, where travellers can view and purchase the vast selection of products at very reasonable prices. Since 2003, the former home of Nobel laureate writer Halldór Laxnes has also opened its doors to the public and become one of Iceland’s major cultural shrines. The town has a rich source of thermal energy and many greenhouses have been constructed. The mountainous area surrounding the town is ideal for skiing and other snow activities. Fishing for trout and salmon in the small lakes and rivers is also a popular sport. Most visitors pass through Mosfellsbær on their way to Northern Iceland or West towards the ancient parliamentary site of Thingvellir.
